San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a tweet on Friday that the city will temporarily delay its scheduled reopening on Monday, which included nail salons, hair salons, and outdoor bars, as the number of Covid cases increases. -19 in California.

“We saw 103 cases yesterday. On June 15, when we first reopened outdoor restaurants and retail stores, we were 20,” Breed wrote on Twitter. “At our current rate, the number could quickly double. If that continues and we do not intervene, we will be in such a high number that our only option would be to close.”

Initially, the city submitted a request to the state on June 22 to move to its next reopening phase on June 29, rather than in mid-July, as previously scheduled. Breed said that the next phase would allow the reopening of zoos, outdoor pools, open-air bars, hair salons, hair salons, tattoo parlors, nail salons and museums next week.

However, the Covid-19 cases have shown signs of acceleration in California. It is one of 35 states where cases grew 5% or more as of Thursday, based on the change in the average number of new cases compared to last week, according to a CNBC analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

The state reported a nearly 44% increase in its weekly average of coronavirus cases, with an average of 4,861 new cases daily.

Governor Gavin Newsom has left state municipalities to decide if they are prepared to reopen certain parts of their economy after more rural counties reported small cases of Covid-19. Until now, San Francisco has reopened outdoor dining, indoor retail, and other small public activities with limited health and capacity modifications, according to the city’s reopening guidelines.

Newsom said at a press conference on Friday that San Francisco’s decision to pause its planned reopening based on the increased number of cases was “exactly how it’s supposed to work” and said he was “satisfied” with the leadership in the city.

When asked about the state’s reopening plan, Newsom said he had already been on hiatus for “more than a week ago.” That includes Disney’s recent decision not to reopen in early July.

Other states in the United States have had to pause or reverse some of their reopening plans. Earlier Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the state’s bars closed and reduced the ability to dine at restaurants, among other modifications.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis said the state has no further plans to reopen at this time. He added that the state “never anticipated” will continue to make progress on this point. In Arizona, Governor Doug Ducey said that if the state’s reopening were a stoplight, it would be in the “yellow” or “yield” position.
