Santa Clara, California. – The early backfield of the San Francisco 49ers returned to early Wednesday, with quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Rahim Mostert practicing for the first time since leaving with injuries in Week 2.
Geropolo and Mustart practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday and their position for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins is not yet clear, it was the first and positive step in the right direction for both players.
Earlier this week, Niners coach Kyle Shanahn said he was not sure if Geropolo would practice this week, but he wanted to see where he was on Wednesday before making a decision. The team held a walkthrough early on Wednesday that encouraged Garoppolo enough to gain some prestige in practice and made Shanahan more optimistic that he could play on Sunday.
“He did well in the walkthrough and we’ll see how he goes,” Shanah said. “But we’ll throw him there today and he’ll at least give me an opinion.”
Geroppolo has been ruled out after suffering a right ankle sprain at the start of Week 2’s win over the New York Jets. He hadn’t practiced any of the last two weeks since Nick Mulens set foot in the starting job.
Mulens led the Ers ers to a win over the New York Giants over Week Week, but the Philadelphia Eagles struggled last week in a losing streak, dropping two interceptions and losing a blur that eventually led to his benching. Should Geropolo be unable to play this week, Shanah said he has made a decision on whether Mul Lens or Beathard will start in his place, although he did not want to reveal it yet. “I’ll catch up because there’s a difference between them and if Jimmy can’t go, I’ll find him in Miami on Sunday,” Shanah said. “But I’ve decided that.
