07/30 Update below. This post was originally published on July 28.
Samsung will soon launch its most exciting Galaxy smartphone of the year. But you may want to skip it after reading this.
In a new exclusive, the ever-excellent SamMobile has revealed the first details on the successors to the Samsung Galaxy S20 (nicknamed Galaxy S21 / S30) and YouTuber Mauri QHD has marked what we already know will be its game-changing update.
07/29 Update: Mauri QHD has revealed Another update to the Galaxy S21 compared to the Galaxy S20 and the upcoming Note 20: a leap in build quality. The YouTuber says Samsung has decided to ditch the controversial ‘glasstic’ (glass and plastic) hybrid chassis used on entry-level Galaxy S and Note models with the S21. These finishes have been considered cheap by many and an overly aggressive cost reduction exercise, since the prices of these phones are still close to $ 1,000. A word of warning: Mauri says this is Samsung’s “ATM”, so it is subject to change if pressure on margins increases.
07/30 update: more Galaxy S21 news has come out through the popular Samsung site SamMobile, which claims that the next generation flagship will have a much improved front camera. SamMobile claims this will be accomplished by increasing the size of the sensor and adding optical image stabilization. Two sensors are being considered: a 1/2-inch 48MP sensor and a 1 / 2.55-inch 12MP sensor, both larger than anything Samsung has ever used on the front of their phones before. That said, it is the inclusion of OIS that could be more beneficial, since selfies are usually taken with the arm outstretched much more jerkily than a standard rear camera photograph. For selfie fans, this could make the Galaxy S21 series your smartphone.
Breaking things down, SamMobile says most of what they learned about the Galaxy S21 range won’t come as a surprise: three models, just like the previous Galaxy S10 and S20 lineups, 5G across the board (with some regional options only 4G) and 128 / 256GB storage options as standard. So far so standard, but here’s the twist of the head – what drives them.
Thanks to Samsung’s leaked benchmarks, we know that the chipset inside the Galaxy S21 is potentially transformative. Based on Samsung’s own roadmap, it is understood to be an Exynos 1000 manufactured in conjunction with AMD using a custom Radeon GPU. And those benchmarks? The gaming performance offered up to 2.5 times the performance of a Snapdragon 865. That is a multi-generational improvement and means that it not only leaves every rival Android smartphone eating its dust, but also every iPhone.
Of course, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will launch in a few weeks and it’s not easy with a Snapdragon 865+, a slimmed-down version of the 865. It also has an industry first LPTO display and some essential camera changes. That said, it looks like it will be priced at close to $ 1,400, while the entry-level Note 20 at $ 1,000 looks like a dumpster fire to avoid.
Yes, I hope the Galaxy S21 range is also expensive, but if you can only afford a Note 20 right now, my advice would be to wait for the arrival of the S21 in February. If Samsung’s final product can meet its first benchmarks, then you’ll be glad you did.
