We got another view of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 thanks to a new listing on the Chinese Telecom Regulatory Authority (TENAA) website, which clearly shows the side and front view of the following foldable to let.
True, the phone is turned off in the photos, so we do not get any new ideas on what it will look like in use, as we did at the unveiling of the Z Fold 2 in early August. But the images in the TENAA entry offer a few perspectives we haven’t seen before – for example, the foldable camera block is chunky, more excellent than most phones we’ve seen. Good luck resting it on a flat surface.
The photos also confirm that the rear cameras look identical to those on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, but without the vertical oval below the flash on the camera block of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which holds the new laser focus. That’s an unfortunate omission of a foldable phone that is expected to cost as much as or more than the original Samsung Galaxy Fold (whose starting price was $ 1,980 / £ 1,900 / AU $ 2,900).
The TENAA listing unfortunately did not come with a full spec sheet, but contained a model number SM-F9160, as first detected by GizmoChina. The publication also claims that US pre-orders for the device will be open on September 2 and on sale on September 18, confirm a recent claim made by leaker Evan Blass.
Foldable for the future?
Despite the fold-up shown in the photos of the TENAA listing, we can not see our most eagerly anticipated feature: the 6.2-inch front screen spans almost the entire length of the exterior of the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which is much more than the 4.6-inch display on the front of the original Galaxy Fold.
At Samsung Unpacked, we saw the new foldable in teaser footage, and Samsung learned Samsung redesigned the hinge with vacuum cleaner-like breasts to flush away dirt and dust every time you unfold the device. Pack on a 4500mAh battery and 5G compatibility in all regions, and the Fold 2 seems to improve on some (though not all) shortcomings in the original device.
We will know more when Samsung holds an event on September 1st that we expect will involve a far more robust unveiling of the device.
