The teenager, identified as Linden Cameron by his mother Golda Barton, was hospitalized after the shooting about two weeks ago.
An independent police investigation is being conducted, and Salt Lake City Police said they expect additional investigations from the district attorney’s office and the Civil Review Board.
Barton told CNN that his son has Asperger’s Syndrome and is unable to control himself. She called police on the day of the shooting who was “mentally broken” and requested help for her son.
A video released on Monday shows Burton telling police to arrest his son Cameron and taking him to hospital for violent threats and disorderly conduct.
The mother tells officers that her son has triggers related to law enforcement and has access to a BB gun or prop weapon, but she doesn’t think he has a real gun.
Officers responded that he had a gun as if he wanted to treat the situation.
During one recording, an officer can be heard expressing resentment over an attempt to apprehend the boy.
The officer is heard saying, “No one is in danger if there is no one in the house … but it doesn’t hurt themselves, sorry, I’m not going to take part in the shooting.”
The videos show officers approaching the house and then breaking the wooden fence at one point and starting to chase the boy. Cameron is seen walking slowly while ignoring the demand to land.
An officer opens the fire and eleven shots can be heard on the recordings. “I don’t feel well,” Cameron turns to the ground and then says, “Tell my mom I love her.”
Barton told CNN earlier this month that the boy’s injuries included damage to his shoulders, ankles, intestines, bladder and colon.
City officials described the shooting as “tragic.”
The Salt Lake City Police Department declined to comment on Barton’s claim that Kerton was unarmed. The body footage shows no weapon in Mera’s footage, although the video is poor and Cameron wears a dark dress.
“I am deeply saddened by this tragic situation,” Chief Mike Brown told a news conference on Monday. “As a father of three young sons, this has had a big impact on me personally,” Brown said. He gave no details about the investigation.
“As a member of this community, and as the mother of a 14-year-old boy, I am very heartbroken and disappointed,” Mayor Erin Mendenhall echoed the chief’s sentiments.
