A Salt Lake City police officer was arrested Wednesday and is being investigated for a brutal attack on a Black man involving a police dog. Video appeared of the exchange that took place in the man’s own garden. Some of the recordings may be disturbing to some.

“Go to the ground or you will become something,” an official could be said in the clip.

Just six seconds after that warning, the officer commands his K-9 to attack.

“Hit. Hit.”, Said the officer. “I’m on the ground, why are you biting me? I’m on the ground, stop,” the man could be heard saying.

Every time the officer says “hit”, the dog bites down on the leg of 36-year-old Jeffery Ryans.

“Good boy, good boy,” the officer is heard to say. “Ow! Why are you doing this?” Frege Ryans. “Good boy, hit! Good boy,” the officer continues.

Ryans’ attorney, Dan Garner, told CBS News that his client did not move at all.

“Even if the dog starts biting him. He is, he’s just lying there,” Garner explained. “It looks like someone took a chainsaw to his leg.”

Police responded to a call of domestic disturbance and said Ryans had been given a protective order by his wife. But Ryans said the order would be lifted.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s K-9 program will undergo an external review. Deputy Chief Jeff Kendrick told CBS News that they restricted the use of police dogs at the time.

“Just implement them for searches, but we do not want them to come into contact with one person,” he explained.

Ryans has yet to recover from multiple surgeries and an amputation is not ruled out.
