SEOUL, March 31 (Xinhua) – Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was arrested in early Friday when a court in Seoul approved prosecutors’ request following her impeachment earlier this month over a corruption scandal surrounding her.
The court said in a statement that Park’s main criminal allegations could be justified while remaining concerned about a possibility of its devastating evidence.
The arrest warrant, sought earlier this week by prosecutors, was issued by the court after Thursday’s hearing that lasted nearly nine hours, the longest in the country’s history.
Park became the third South Korean former leader to be seized. The country’s first female president became the first leader to be dismissed by impeachment, which was approved by the constitutional court in a historic March 10 ruling.
