RZA came up with a new ice truck jingle because the old one was used in minstrel shows

The Wu-Tang Girl’s hip-hop icon has teamed up with ice cream brand Good Humor to reinvent the signature “Turkey in the Straw” that is played by ice-cream lovers all over the country. Because as it turns out, the tune has a problematic past.
“Do you remember that ice cream jingle? Of course we know it all,” RZA said in a promotional video for Good Humor, which is owned by Unilever. “However, I will not play it now because we find out it has racist roots.”
“Turkey in the Straw” originated from a traditional British tune brought to the American colonies by Scottish-Irish immigrants, according to scientist Theodore R. Johnson in his 2014 article for NPR.

The original song has no racial undertones. But the melody to ‘Turkey in the Straw’ was used by minstrel show performers in blackface and tuned in to very racist lyrics – and that’s how it went prominently in the US, Johnson wrote. Ice rinks through the years often played minstrel songs, which were eventually turned into ice truck jingles.

“While these associations of ‘Turkey in the Strait’ are not the only part of his legacy, there is no doubt that this melody evokes memories of his racist iterations,” Good Humor said in a statement.

Good Humor called on all drivers of ice trucks to stop playing “Turkey in the Straw”, saying that the new jingle made by RZA will be made available for ice fragments all over the country. The jingle will also be added to industry standard refrigerator music boxes, the company said.

“Good Humor has not owned ice cream parlors since the 1970s, and we have also created ‘Turkey in the Strait’ like no other jingles,” the company wrote in a statement.

“As a leader in the industry, and the inventor of the original ice truck, however, we want to be part of the solution to this problem, especially since we work closely with so many ice truck drivers across the country.”
