Russell Crowe’s ‘Unhinged’ Swap $ 4M in First Major US Release Since Lockdowns

Russell Crowe’s road-rage thriller “Unhinged” grossed $ 4 million at US offices over the weekend, the first major movie release in theaters since the pandemic took place.

The film has already generated $ 7.7 million overseas and in Canada, after it was released earlier this month.

The opening numbers were mostly among previous film debuts with Crowe, an Academy Award winner: “A Good Year” grossed $ 3.7 million in 2006; “The Next Three Days” raised $ 6.5 million in 2010; “The Insider” grossed 6.7 million in 1999; and “Gladiator” won $ 32.7 million in 2000.

“We made the movie for $ 33 million,” Mark Gill, producer of ‘Unhinged’ and head of Solstice Studios, told The Hill last week. “If we do $ 30 million at the North American box office by the time we finish our run, we’re happy.”

“Unhinged” was released because most American movie theaters operate at 25 percent to 50 percent capacity, although theaters in some major cities are still closed.

The film has a 76 percent audience rating on the website of the movie version Rotten Tomatoes.

A recent survey of U.S. filmmakers by U.S. digital ticketing platform Atom Tickets found that 77 percent of respondents said they were willing to go back to theaters once they reopened, with only 1 percent saying they never plan to are going back to theaters.
