Rumors: iPhone 12 battery capacity, launch potentially delayed until November

A couple of new rumors today claim to offer new details about the iPhone 12’s specs and release dates for this fall. According to a new report from Macotakara, the launch of the iPhone 12 5G models could be delayed until November.

The report cites “multiple Chinese suppliers” and claims that the iPhone 12 could be announced in the second half of October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From there, an iPhone 12 LTE would only launch in mid-October, while 5G iPhone 12 models would launch in November.

This report should be treated with skepticism based on other supply chain reports that we have seen recently. First, there is little corroboration that Apple plans to launch an LTE-only iPhone 12 this year. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said this year’s four iPhone 12 models will support 5G, including support for both 5G versions: sub-6 GHz 5G and mmWave 5G.

Separately, a report from last month said the iPhone 12 is back on track for a September launch. There is a possibility of a phased launch, but even those rumors suggest the iPhone 12 would launch in October. It would be unusual for Apple to also promote the iPhone announcement in October.

Meanwhile, a separate rumor posted on Twitter today claims to offer a look at the battery capacity of the iPhone 12 Pro. This rumor cites an alleged filling in Korea through the agency SafetyKorea, and claims that an iPhone 12 model will have a capacity. 2,775 mAh battery.

For comparison, here are the iPhone’s battery capacities for the past two years:

  • iPhone XS: 2,658 mAh
  • iPhone XS Max: 3,174 mAh
  • iPhone XR: 2,942 mAh
  • iPhone 11: 3,110 mAh
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 3,046 mAh
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 3,969 mAh

This would mean that one of the iPhone 12 models would feature a battery of similar size to the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. Remember that this year we expect four different variants of iPhone 12: one 5.4-inch device, two 6.1-inch models, and one 6.7-inch model.
