Rugby player steps opponent, two fans, police say

SYDNEY – Sydney rugby league officials and police say a game under 20 ended in violence on Sunday with a player allegedly stabbing a competitor and two spectators.

Police said emergency services were called to Old Saleyards Reserve in North Parramatta following reports of an attack on a community game under the age of 20 between Wentworthville Magpies and Penrith Brothers.

“It is alleged that two Western football teams in Sydney were involved in a fight after the match ended,” said Grant Morrissey of NSW Police. “As a result of this change, one man who played for one of the teams was stopped by another man who also played for the opposite team.

“Two spectators were also involved in the exchange and they were also stabbed.”

NSWRL chief executive David Trodden said everyone involved will never have a role in the game again.

“The incident is sick criminal behavior and those responsible for deserving to get the full force of the law,” he said in a statement. “Anyone who enjoys community sports during the weekend should expect to be able to do so in a safe environment.”

NSW Ambulance Inspector Nathan Sheraton said paramedics provided life-saving treatment.

“When we arrived on the scene it was very alarming – these were brutal attacks,” he said in a statement.
