When Ruby Rose announced in May that she would not be returning to the CWs Batwoman for her second season, she did not comment on what led to the decision. Now, several months later, Rose details the challenges she faces for the DC drama, including her need to undergo a back surgery after a planned accident in 2019.
‘It’s hard to be the leader of a superhero show. Being the leader in everything is difficult, ”Rose told EW in a new interview. ‘But I think in that particular case it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and 10 days later I went to work, which might not have been the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before returning to work, so this has definitely been made more difficult. But to the extent that it is the lead of a show or a movie – regardless of action or emotional – in what ways it is taxing. “

She made her decision to leave the show amid the coronavirus-related production shutdown, which allowed her some time to gain some insight and reflection. As Deadline reported at the time of her announcement, Rose was not happy during the filming of the first season, and her behavior made everyone on the set mischievous to the point that no one could see this going on for another season, leading to the breakup.
Rose told EW her decision to leave the series was not just because of her injury.
‘It was not so much [the injury], especially since we did not get to the real final after packing because of COVID, ‘she says. ‘You know, you have time in quarantine and kind of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do. I think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about many things. I respect them so much and they have been so respectful to me. ”
Rose reiterated how proud she is to have played the first gay main character – male or female – of a superhero series live action.
“I think it was actually a wonderful way to do something, especially since this was the first time it was ever done – the first time that Batwoman was ever played in live action and that she was LGBTQ. I’m very proud I could play her. ”
Rose is also very supportive of Javicia Leslie, who will portray the next Batwoman, the new character Ryan Wilder.
“I think she absolutely knows what she’s doing and she looks fantastic,” Rose told EW. ‘I think honestly, I was so proud and so happy when I was told who would replace me. I’m just really stoked and I’ll definitely be watching it next season too and see how it all comes together. ”
