KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Royals put catcher Salvador Perez on the injured list with lingering vision problems and called on Randy Rosario to add a left hand in the ball ahead of their three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
Perez woke up Sunday with vision problems and called Royals coach Nick Kenney. He missed a visit to a specialist on Monday and was good enough to go back to the lineup, but he went out the rest of the week with blurry vision.
Royals manager Mike Matheny said the specialist found “a little bit of fluid” and “there is a long, complex name for it”, but that there is not much risk in the long run. Cam Gallagher will continue as the primary catcher in Perez’s absence.
It’s been a rough 18 months for Perez, a six-time All-Star who missed the entire final season after Tommy John’s surgery. Perez was back on the field for spring training before the coronavirus pandemic set things in motion, and he then took on COVID-19 when the team began meeting for the start-up period ahead of the short season.
He was healthy by the time the season started, hitting .307 with four homers and 12 RBIs through 22 games.
