Will Royal Caribbean Group sell more or retire cruise ships? The company is considering all options according to Jason Liberty, executive vice president and chief financial officer, speaking on Monday on Royal Caribbean’s second call
Liberty said that over the years it has sold an average of one to two ships a year
He notes that the typical philosophy is that the ship should have a plan to generate a large return, and the company would invest in a ship to make it a strategic fit in a fleet. If not, the company has long sought to sell a ship.
“We put a lot of money into these ships; these ships are doing exceptionally well, ”Liberty continued. ‘It’s a difficult decision to share with a ship because it generates so much money.’
Liberty stated that Royal Caribbean considers every opportunity, or that ship sales are like other actions.
“The three ships related to Pullmantur are in the scraping process,” he added.
The Sovereign and Monarch are currently being dismantled in Turkey, while the Horizon has yet to arrive.
