Rolling Stone updates list of best 500 albums, Marvin Gay tops list

Rolling Stone has updated its list of 500 best-selling albums.

The heavily debated list of releases was first created in 2003, and now contains 154 new additions that were not listed on the original or 2012 versions of the list.

According to the updated article, to make this list, the outlet “lists the top 50 albums from more than 300 artists, producers, critics and music-industry figures.”

The Beatles’ fifth place this time is “Abbey Road.” The outlet states that the album was recorded while the iconic band was “on the verge of breakup”.

The record includes some of the Beatles’ most iconic numbers, including “The Sun Comes Here,” “Come Too Rate,” and “Something.”

Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life” is number four on the new list.

The iconic album, one of Wonder’s most recognizable and acclaimed, features popular tunes such as “Isn’t Sheet Lovely”, “AS” and “I Wish”.

At number three is Johnny Mitchell’s “Blue,” which the outlet said “might be the final breakup album.”

Known for embracing both romance and sexuality, the album includes tracks such as “California,” “Carrie” and perhaps his most successful film, “River.”

The outlet reports that the album originally began as a “reaction to police brutality” as the title track for Tops was written by bass singer Ronaldo “OB” Benson, when he broke police protests.

Mottown founder Barry Gordy was reluctant to release the song, but once it was successful, Gay was asked to complete the album.

Other popular tunes featured on this record are “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” and “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler).”
