Riverside County set a new record for the largest one-day jump in the number of new coronavirus cases, while the number of COVID-19 deaths increased from 17 to 457 in the Tuesday, June 30 update on the site. county public health website.
The county also experienced a new record in COVID-19 hospitalizations, which rose from 365 on Monday, June 29 to 403 on Tuesday, a jump of 10% and 28% more than a week ago. Of those 403, 109 patients are in intensive care, another highly rated.
Riverside County now has 17,296 confirmed cases, 662 more, about 4%, as of Monday. Updates posted during the week on the public health website generally reflect diagnoses and deaths that occurred over a span of days, as the information takes time to reach the public health department.
As of Monday, 96.1% of all county licensed intensive care unit beds were in use, up from 98.7% on Sunday. COVID-19 patients represent approximately 30% of all ICU beds in use, and hospitals can convert regular beds to ICU beds if necessary.
Five of those hospitalized are from Imperial County and 13 in county hospitals are inmates of state prisons. COVID-19 patients represent 10.1% of all hospitalized patients in the county and 172 ventilators were in use, with 506 available as of Monday.
The three state jails in Riverside County have 421 active cases, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Of those three, the Chuckawalla Valley state prison, just outside Blythe, has the majority of cases with 291. A second Chuckawalla inmate died Sunday of what appears to be complications of the virus, state corrections officials reported.
County jails have 248 confirmed cases with 207 recoveries. Long-term care facilities in the county, including nursing homes, have 1,838 cases, including 1,165 among patients and 673 among staff.
Officially, 7,854 in the county have recovered from the virus, 2.4% more than Monday. Official recoveries are defined as those that are no longer isolated, show no symptoms, and have closed their public health cases.
Nearly 231,000 COVID-19 tests have been administered in the county, 3.6% more than on Monday. Tuesday’s 8,096 new test results are a one-day record, and the average of nearly 5,300 test results per day for the past seven days is also a record.
