Police described a chaotic scene. They said several protesters were “starting fires, throwing stones at officers, laser-targeting officers, and firing projectiles with slingshots at officers.”

Andy Ngo, the journalist, posted a video of the riots near federal court that he said showed the US military guarding the building that was under attack.

“They rushed in and made an arrest here,” he posted. “Antifa has been trying to burn down the building for hours.”

He said police in the city center were “under attack” for hours. When police officers try to respond, “they go to social media tagging politicians and lawyers who claim police brutality.”

On Wednesday night, anarchists in the city torched a 120-year-old moose statue that had been the target earlier, according to Oregon Live.

Portland Police Office Chief Chuck Lovell said in a statement: “Engaging in criminal activity, including vandalism and property damage, is not a peaceful demonstration. We ask for the public’s help to identify and share information about those responsible so they can be responsible. “
