Calamari 2020.
A plate of mishandled and baked ink was named the unofficial winner of the Democratic National Convention on social media on Tuesday night, after Rhode Island Democratic Party chairman cast his vote alongside a chef holding the seafood platter during the virtual roll call.
The rep. Ocean State’s Joseph McNamara spoke behind Iggy’s Boardwalk, a staple seafood restaurant on Oakland Beach in Warwick, where he was joined by the restaurant’s executive chef, John Bordieri. Bordieri held up a dish with calamari in the Rhode Island style, typically made with banana peppers and oil paint.

McNamara pulled on the state dish to show the comeback of the Rhode Island fishery amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Rhode Island, the Ocean State where our restaurant and the fishing industry are decimated by this pandemic, are fortunate to have a Governor, Gina Raimondo, whose program allows our fishermen to sell their catches directly to the public. And our state appetizer, calamari, is available in all 50 states, ”said McNamara.
Raimondo implemented a program to allow fishermen to sell their catches directly to consumers, fish markets and restaurants instead of exclusively to wholesalers, as so many restaurants were forced to close during the pandemic, and required less seafood inventory as a result.
“The Calamari Comeback State of Rhode Island has one vote for Bernie Sanders and 34 votes for the next president, Joe Biden,” McNamara added.

Calamari became the official appetizer of Rhode Island in 2014 to promote the state’s expansive squid and its impact on the state’s restaurant and tourism industry.
Social media immediately muffled the appetizing roll call with the hashtags #Calamari and #RhodeIsland trending shortly thereafter, with eaters both confused and enthusiastic by the 30-second spot.
“To date, Rhode Island’s use of its DNC state facility is primarily an opportunity to hawk calamari the most on-market of all states and territories,” one user tweeted.
“OMG Rhode Island calamari has just won the entire election,” tweeted another user.
