If you are the type of adventurous person carrying your home on your back, or perhaps in an RV, I have good news for you: The new Ford Bronco 2021 can be flat-towed. This means that the recreational breaks you decide to hit the road with can be done with your new off-road vehicle by following closely, such as Ford Authority reports.
Apparently, this was a very popular question among potential buyers. Finally, it was answered by Ford spokesman Mike Levine on Twitter, who claimed that the Bronco was designed to be towed.
Levine did not elaborate on the process of towing the Bronco, but we can assume that it would be similar to how one must prepare the Bronco’s closest competitor, the Jeep Wrangler, to be towed.
In the case of the Wrangler 2020 with four-wheel drive, the car must be changed to parking in automatic vehicles or in second or third gear in manuals. In both cases, the Jeep transfer cases must be in neutral. This process may seem a bit counterintuitive, but it’s to ensure that the transmission stays properly lubricated as you go.
Transmission oil circulates through both the transmission input and output shafts, but the output shaft is connected to the rear wheels and continues to rotate if the car is in neutral. If the input shaft remains stationary, as it would in neutral, it can cause lubrication problems. This can be countered by disconnecting the drive shaft or adding a lubrication pump to the transmission, however a simpler solution is to put the car in proper gear. If the transmission oil does not circulate properly, the gears and axles can be eaten alive.
That would be a bad thing in your new Bronco 2021, so do the right thing and listen to what Ford tells you. That’s all it takes to avoid flat trailer nightmares.
