When it comes to flirting, it’s all at a glance.
According to researchers at the University of Kansas, women give certain facial expressions when flirting.
The team used the Facial Action Action Coding System (FACS) to identify the most recognizable flirtatious facial expressions.

Researchers at the University of Kansas have found that some female facial expressions, including tilted head and maintained eye contact, were known as flirting by men.
Flirting is one of the major components of human sexuality, but its analysis by scientists has only just begun.
“There are very few scientific articles that have systematically studied this well-known phenomenon,” said Omri Gilat, a psychologist at the University of Kansas and co-author of the report, published in the St. Research Journal.
‘None of these have identified facial flirting facial expressions and tested its effects.’
Gilat said an analysis of half a dozen studies found that women’s facial expressions expressed arousal or sexual interest, and men recognized those signs to represent flirting.
A woman’s flirting is different from the same expression as a regular smile, said psychiatrist Omri Gilat. ‘It has a special morphology’
He explained that looks are different from similar gestures, smiling, which is not always part of flirting.
‘It has a specific morphology,’ Gilat said.
In the study, women were asked to either make a spontaneous presentation of what they thought was a polite expression or follow the researchers’ instructions on what they were offering.
Participants were a mix of professional actresses and regular volunteers.
Some women were more effective at delivering a ‘flirt’ facial gesture, and some men were better at recognizing it, but the exact expression as flirt was successfully identified by almost all men.
After identifying these most recognized manifestations of flirting, the researchers used them in experimental studies.
‘Our findings support the role of congratulatory expression in the initiation of communication and intercourse,’ Gilat said.
‘For the first time, we were not only able to distinguish and identify the expressions that flirting represents, but we were also able to disclose their function – to activate relationships and organizations associated with gender.’
The May study also indicated that visual cues played a more important role than the pickup line when it came to flirting.
Experts from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus surveyed more than 80,000 volunteers and found that both men and women said they were more likely to respond to well-looking and well-dressed flirters.
Other traits – such as carrying or determining the air of mystery – were important, but ranked lower.
In a report published in the journal Personality and Personal Differences, the authors hinted, ‘Good eye contact and a good scent will make flirting more effective.’
‘Women rated non-verbal behavior and a more effective soft approach on them, while men rated good looks more effective.’
The older participants responded respectfully and politely from the suit.
“Flirting is an essential aspect of human interaction and the key to building intimate relationships,” the report said.
