Republican governors of Indiana and Ohio issue masking mandates, joining more than half of the U.S. states.

In Indiana, Governor Eric Holcomb announced that he would sign an executive order Thursday that would require masks on and off when people couldn’t socially distance themselves. Three weeks ago, Holcomb said he did not need to establish a mask mandate because he hoped the Hoosiers would do the right thing. Indiana’s mask mandate begins Monday.

Holcomb apologized in May after taking a photo with two other people inside an Indiana restaurant without a mask.

Last week, Republican governors in Alabama and Arkansas announced masking mandates.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, also announced a statewide mask mandate on Wednesday that will take effect on Saturday.

The statewide action comes when the president, for the first time, urged the public to wear face covers during a press conference on Tuesday night.

“Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact,” Trump said, offering his greatest support for the practice to date.

A recent POLITICO / Morning Consult poll found that 72 percent of voters are in favor of masking mandates across the state thanks to majority support from Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
