Remove ads from the Android TV homepage while you still can

The latest Android TV Home update adds a new “Cinematic Highlights” section to the home of Android TV screen. This new tab – which is now one of the first you will see in the interface – automatically plays ads for new shows and movies. If that irritates you, you still have a chance to fix it (for now).

To be honest, the ads are not too invasive, but I sympathize with those who do not like them. It closes the menu extra goods many people probably will not use. Besides, is it really a “suggestion” if you just show everyone the same ads, disguised as a trailer?

While the Cinematic Highlights tab will be permanent one day, it is initially only optional. Users can remove the ads by uninstalling the latest update of the Android TV Home app or by preventing it from being downloaded in the first place.

Remove the latest Android TV Home update

You can uninstall the new update from Android TV Home app if you recently installed it. Make sure you remove it quickly; otherwise the option to roll back to a version without the home screen ads will no longer be available.

  1. Go to your Android TV device Settings.
  2. Select Apps, doe See all apps, en Show system apps.
  3. Search and select “Android TV Home” in the applist.
  4. Select “Remove updates” in the app options to uninstall the latest update and roll back to the previous app version.
  5. Let the process run.

With the Cinematic Highlights category removed from the Android TV homepage, you should now disable the automatic updates of Android TV so that your device does not accidentally reinstall it.

Prevent automatic app updates

You need to perform this step, whether you have the update installed or not. Otherwise, Android TV will automatically update your apps and reinstall the home screen ads.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app on your Android TV device.
  2. going to “Settings” from the side menu.
  3. Select “Update apps automatically.”
  4. Disable auto-updates. Note that you will have to manually install app updates through Google Play if this option is disabled.

With the possibility of removing unwanted automatic app updates, you should now be safe from the ads for the home screen, at least for now. Google will probably force the Cinematic Highlights on everyone by sharing mandatory future updates, after which reverting to older versions of Android TV Home app will no longer be possible. But hey, this gives us a little more time to enjoy a less messy home TV from Android TV.
