A Notre Dame spokesperson confirms … Philbin’s funeral will be held at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of South Bend, Indiana.
Philbin, who graduated from ND in 1953, will be buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery, which is located on campus. No date has been set.
University Spokesperson Dennis Brown confirmed on Sunday that Philbin, who died on Friday for heart disease, will have a funeral service at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and will be buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery on campus. The date has not been set.
We are also told that Notre Dame is considering different ways to honor Regis during the football season due to the fact that he was a great supporter of ND football … and really all ND sports.
He used to talk passionately about ND football on every platform he could. Remember when he brought the Leprechaun in “Regis and Kelly?”
In fact, Philbin was a huge ND supporter, he donated a famous $ 2.75 million to the University in 2001 to create the Philbin Studio Theater, a performing arts venue on campus.
The President of Notre Dame, Rev. John Jenkins praised Philbin in a statement,
“Regis made millions on the air over the years, often sharing a passionate love for his alma mater with viewers,” said Jenkins.
“He will be remembered at Notre Dame for his unwavering support for the university and its mission, including the Philbin Studio Theater at our Performing Arts Center.”
As previously reported, Philbin early Saturday after suffering a heart attack at his home.
He was 88 years old.
