Reds bats cold in loss at St. Louis

The Reds offense could get nothing on Saturday night. It has unfortunately become an all too common theme for the Reds of 2020. Kwang-Hyun Kim last night recorded his first major league win for the Cardinals, as he allowed just 3 hits and 0 walks over six strong innings.

Greatest Game of the Game

According to Fangraphs WPA statistics (winning percentage added) was the most important play of the game Wade Miley let Tommy Edman leave a 2-run single with 1 out in the 3rd inning, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. That game reduced the Reds’ chances of winning by 11.9% (from 34.8% to 22.9%).

Positives

Kyle Farmer had three hits.

Tejay Antone had another great outing, with 2.1 scoreless innings. Antone now has a 1.72 ERA / 3.05 FIP over 15.2 innings this season.

The Reds bullpen keeps rolling. They have allowed just 3 runs in the past 26.0 innings.

The negative

The Reds offense was rough. Guys, not named Kyle Farmer, had 1 hit and 2 walks combined. They played 9 nights of hard hitting balls at night according to Statcast (Cardinals only had 3).

Wade Miley was …… good Wade Miley. Not good, not terrible. He allowed only 3 hard balls that night and was the victim of some bad luck, but he also ran 3 boys.

Not so random thoughts ………… ..

Our old friend Richard Fitch pointed out the Reds are as last dead in the MLB in BABIP around .236 (and there is big gap between the Reds on the next worse). You would have to think that this will somehow work out on its own. The worst team in the MLB in 2019 was .280 (the worst at the all-star break was .272).

Great game tomorrow for the Reds. If only with a split from St. Louis could, they would have to feel pretty good about themselves.
