The Red Sox announced that they have selected the right Zack Godley its 40 men and active lists. Right-handed companion Dylan Covey has been optional to his minor league training site to clear the active space on the roster. His 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
Boston signed Godley to a minor league contract shortly after the Tigers released him at the start of Summer Camp. Godley did not immediately order a spot on the 40-man roster, but it always seemed likely that he would take a look at an uncertain pitching team. The 30-year-old turned into a couple of productive seasons as a starter with the 2017-18 Diamondbacks. Combined, he threw 333.1 innings of 4.10 ERA with a solid combination of strikeouts (24.7%), walks (9.4%), and ground balls (51.6%).
The wheels fell completely in 2019. Between Arizona and Toronto, Godley had a 5.97 ERA in 33 appearances (9 starts) with dramatic drops in his strikeouts and penalties. Along the way, Godley has lost some speed in both his cutter and plumb line. However, given his somewhat recent respectable record, it’s easy to see why the Red Sox are willing to take another look at him. Your current top four headlines Nathan Eovaldi, Martín Pérez, Ryan Weber and Matt Hall– It hardly inspires much confidence.
Covey, too, is a recent addition to the pitching team, which was acquired from the Rays on Tuesday. The three-year starter for the White Sox threw two innings of relief in yesterday’s loss to the Orioles.
