The Red Sox have re-established lefty Darwinzon Hernandez removed from the wound list and grid space by designating infiltrator Christian Arroyo for assignment, per a team announcement.
Hernandez, 23, has yet to pitch in after 2020 after missing Summer Camp due to a positive coronavirus test. The Sox had discussed the potential that Hernandez transitioned in rotation prior to the game’s rebounds, and given the state of Boston’s pitching staff, he could see that opportunity very well. Hernandez debuted with 30 1/3 innings of 4.45 ERA ball in 2019, and although he played out a total of 57 hits during that time, he also issued 26 free passes and struck out three fighters.
The 25-year-old Arroyo never even got into a game with the Red Sox after being claimed by the Indians. It seems that there were some delays in connection with his tests for intake, and although he was recently activated by the club, he has now been removed from the roster less than 24 hours later.
Judge Arroyo has appeared in 71 major league games and recorded 251 record appearances, though he has only a .215 / .280 / .342 streak to look forward to. However, Arroyo is a career .298 / .359 / .487 hitter in 418 Triple-A record appearances. The former pickup and top Giants first-round pick has experience on shortstop (2574 innings), third base (1257 innings) and second base (519 innings), but he has no options for less competition, so the Sox could not send him to their changing site without first passing him through exemptions. They will have a week to try to just do this or trade to another club.
