Recover deleted data with Microsoft’s new Windows file recovery tool

Microsoft has released a new data recovery application that can be used to recover files that have been deleted or recover documents from formatted or damaged drives.

Windows File Recovery is a free application in the Microsoft store that can be used to recover lost data for various reasons. The command line tool can be used to recover data from local hard drives as well as removable media such as USB drives and memory cards.

Like this command line tool instead of a native Windows application, Windows file recovery will not be to everyone’s liking. Before, for those who don’t mind rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty, it provided a means to retrieve files from NTFS, FAT, exFAT and ReFS formatted drives.

In the app store list, Microsoft describes the app as follows:

Accidentally deleted an important file? Did you clean your hard drive? Not sure what to do with the corrupted data? Windows File Recovery can help you recover your personal data.

For photos, documents, videos, and more, Windows File Recovery supports many types of files to help ensure that your data is not permanently lost.

Recover from a camera or SD card? Try Signature mode, which expands beyond NTFS recovery and meets the needs of your storage device. Let this app be your first choice to help you find what you need from your hard drive, SSD (* limited by TRIM), USB drive or memory cards.

You can download Windows File Recovery here, and more information about the application is available from the Microsoft support site.
