Atlanta United played a football game for the first time in 32 days and scored in that football game, the team’s first goal in more than five months. Two goals from Pity Martinez secured the three points for Atlanta in an empty (well, almost empty next to the flags) Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Under interim coach Stephen Glass, Atlanta United entered the post Frank de Boer era with a win. Let’s take a look at the goals.
Cubo Torres made his Atlanta United debut and almost scored. Nothing at all.
Take away
I’ll just be honest here. I did not know I did not have the channel for the match until 20 minutes before the match started. I missed a decent chunk of the game, so my analysis may seem a bit sly.
I feel like Atlanta United has made progress, but the bar was set pretty low. Atlanta won, but dominated in no way. Nashville beat Atlanta 15-6, though Nashville wants to put a number of them out of goal. As a friend told me about text, “Pity is unleashed”, which is an accurate summation of Argentina’s achievements. If Stephen Glass can continue to get the best out of Pity, which will be crucial because of the Joseph-shaped hole at the top position, that would be nice. It’s a small sample size, but we’ll see how Stephen Glass’ Atlanta United does in the next few scheduled games.
Injury Report
Why Barco was not on the team and why Robinson did not start:
Here is what we are told about the lineup:
Barco is out last night because he took a hit in training.
Miles Robinson has not started because he is not 90 minutes fit.
Jurgen Damm is not in the 23, because he needs more time to train with the team.– Mike Conti (@ MikeConti929) August 22, 2020
- Fernando Meza was forced into the half with an injury and was replaced by Miles Robinson.
Man of the match
Compassion. Sure, he was not perfect, but did you see the goals he scored?
