Real Salt Lake owner over team decision to boycott MLS game: ‘It’s a moment of sadness’

Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen was not happy when his team decided Wednesday night not to play against the Los Angeles Galaxy in an MLS game.

Hansen talked about his feelings on X96, which he also has, on Thursday.

“It’s a moment of sadness,” Hansen told Radio From Hell. “It’s like someone stabbed you and you’re trying to figure out a way to pull the knife out and move forward. That’s how it feels. The disrespect was deep to me personally.”

Six games were scheduled for Wednesday on the MLS schedule, five of which were postponed following the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks decision to boycott their playoff game against the Orlando Magic, and other pro sports teams followed suit.

Hansen disagreed with the players’ decision not to play, but he talked about how it discouraged him from investing his money in the team.

“It takes a lot of wind out of my sails, what an effort I want to make to recruit players, and build a great team,” Hansen said. “It just seems like that’s not a great path for me to take.”

Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell too shared his thoughts on the social media site by saying, “WOW … if it gets ‘the wind’, sell the team … I stand with @realsaltlake players.”

Although Hansen disagreed with his team’s decision not to play, both Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Association supported the decision to boycott and not play matches on Wednesday.

“Some things are much more important than sports,” reads the joint statement. “Change must happen and athletes are committed to leading the way.”
