The Kansas City Chiefs had a second starter of their Super Bowl LIV victory due to coronavirus concerns, as running back Damien Williams informed team officials that he would be out for the 2020 season.
“As an organization, we certainly understand and respect Damien’s choice, knowing that it was made in the best interest of his family,” general manager Brett Veach said Wednesday. “It means a lot to our soccer team as a player and as a person, and we are going to miss having him around this season.”
The Chiefs recruited running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire of LSU, in the first round this year. They also have two of their runners from last season, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson, and the incorporation of free agent DeAndre Washington.
Williams, due to various injuries, was limited to 11 regular-season games and six starts in 2019, but still led the Chiefs at 498 yards. Not only did the Super Bowl win start over the San Francisco 49ers, it was a star. He rushed for 104 yards and scored the last two touchdowns of the game in the fourth quarter, one with a 5-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes that gave the Chiefs the lead and the other in a 38-yard run that gave them an end. 31-20 margin over the 49ers.
Williams scored six touchdowns in the Chiefs’ three postseason games.
Williams joined the Chiefs in 2018 after four seasons primarily as a backup for the Miami Dolphins. He replaced Kareem Hunt as the protagonist of the Chiefs at the end of the 2018 season.
Starting guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif also retired from the 2020 season.
