Alas, the good old playground arguments of the 90s. What camp were you in? Even if you were a dedicated owner of Super Nintendo with all the wonderful exclusives the system offered, it was hard not to be a little jealous of the impressive Sega Genesis / Mega Drive library and not to feel a little jealous. And of course, the Mega Drive also had ‘blast processing’, right?
Maybe it was the one game that defined the Mega Drive more than any other, of course, Sonic the stingray. The thought of playing this back in the day on Nintendo hardware seemed crazy, but we obviously did the finally getting a ridiculous port on the Game Boy Advance.
The GBA version was not good enough for TiagoSC’s talented coders, though, who put together an impressive demo showing how the original Mega Drive Sonic The Hedgehog could run on the SNES. This demo uses the original Sonic Team code with several tweaks to run it on the SNES, which of course had a very different machine architecture compared to the Mega Drive.
Watch the Digital Foundry video above to see how the port turned out. We would argue that it’s pretty impressive, and maybe one day we’ll get the full Sonic experience on SNES?
