Rams training camp, day 1: Jared Goff spins it

A review of Tuesday’s practice at Rams’ training camp:

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Reporters got their first chance to see all the work Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff has put on display in his first fully padded practice.

Goff hurried. He showed good accuracy and anticipation in the bag and on the fly. And when he had nothing, Goff pulled the ball down and shook for big wins.

Head coach Sean McVay also said he liked how his starting quarterback got his team quickly in and out of the huddle. The only hiccup for Goff was an interpretation by rookie safety Terrell Burgess on a deep ball.

“He made completions, made good decisions and took what the defense consistently gave him,” McVay said. ‘I thought we got the right way in and out of the huddle. It was on course to do things with the standards we set, and I thought it started today with his performance. ”

GAME OF THE DAY

There were a handful to choose from, but we’ll go with Darious Williams’ interception of John Wolford on a deep ball meant for Trishton Jackson.

Williams ‘pick was the first of back-to-back interceptions by the Rams’ defense, with the second the Burgea takeaway.

At this point in the season to look at it as secondary as it is, it’s definitely a good sight, ”said defense manager Michael Brockers.

Rookie Van Jefferson was also impressive on Tuesday, running polished routes and ensuring consistent separation during 1-on-1 drills. Jefferson also picked up a nice deep ball for a touchdown from Wolford behind Williams.

MATCHUP OF THE DAY

Rookie Cam Akers square with Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey after a decent win, and the two Florida State products had a big collision along the sideline.

Both Akers and Ramsey talk playfully smack when the two make their return to the huddle.

Akers saw the part during practice. He showed that he is a natural catcher in individual route running drills and also showed good patience, with an ability to burst through the hole once he found a seam in the defense.

Akers, Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson Jr. got all reps with the starters during team drills.

ROLL CALL
McVay said second-year safety Taylor Rapp has a knee problem that kept him out of practice on Tuesday, but he feels good about the University of Washington product on the right track to getting on the field soon.

McVay also said that foreigner Justin Lawler stepped on his foot and is being evaluated.

Brockers said a high ankle injury he suffered last year is good to go, and he is able to go at full speed. Defensive Approach A’Shawn Robinson, on the non-football list / injury list with an undisclosed health problem, was seen in practice today with his position group.

The five offensive linemen who worked with the starters included Andrew Whitworth on left tackle, Joe Noteboom on left tackle, Austin Blythe on center, Austin Corbett on right tackle and Rob Havenstein on right tackle.

YOU DON’T SIT

“I just wanted to make sure I did not come as a total tool, with my shirt out at my house in the pool” – McShay, when asked what he thought of his first appearance on “Hard Knocks.”
