When the Raiders signed this offseason quarterback Marcus Mariota, there was a belief around the league that he was brought in to compete and potentially replace Derek Carr. But after a few weeks of practice, it turns out that this is no longer the case.
In a recent article by Tashan Reed of The Athletic, Mariota has not quite clicked with the Raiders yet. Although there are still moments of brilliance and talent, he lacks consistency from day to day in practice. Check out what Reed thinks of Mariota during camp:
“Marcus Mariota has trouble. It has been a rough training camp for the $ 7.5 million full-back. His worst practice may have been Thursday. He threw a bad interpretation and missed a few easy throws by a wide margin. Starting quarterback Derek Carr and coach Jon Gruden have praised Mariota every chance they get, but he’s having a hard time right now. Although I never thought Carr’s job would be in danger, I’m sure now. ”
In Mariota’s defense, he suffered a few injuries last season and he did not really have an offseason to learn the offense. Growing pain was expected, but it is fair to say that there is a huge difference in camp between the top two passers-by.
According to Levi Damien of the Raiders Wire, Mariota had a better day on Friday, he showed his poor talent on a deep pass to Keelan Doss for a touchdown. But it is worth noting again that Damien saw some problems with accuracy, and also missed wide receiver Nelson Agholor on a screen pass.
The hope is that the Raiders will be able to get Mariota on the speed at the time where he could be a possible starter if needed. But every now and then this is Carr’s job all the way and nothing in training camp should suggest that everything changes at any moment.
