Perhaps the San Francisco 49ers can repair their relationship with Raheem Mostert after the runner requested an exchange in early July.
NFL network informant Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Mostert spoke to a senior member of the Niners organization to clear the air and advance on the same page, according to informed sources of the conversation.
When asked about the situation that was possibly being resolved, Mostert’s agent, Brett Tessler, replied, “Hopefully that is the case.”
Mostert’s camp requested an exchange earlier this month after what Tessler called at the time “months of unproductive talks” about the 49ers tightening the broker’s contract.
Mostert, 28, was looking to be paid according to what Tevin Coleman is doing as the team’s highest-paid RB. Coleman is expected to earn $ 4.55 million in 2020. Mostert has two years left on his current contract and a base salary of $ 2.57 million this season.
Mostert’s contract, however, was negotiated when he was primarily an outstanding special team. Last year, when the Niners ran to the Super Bowl, Mostert became the leading running back. He collected a total of 772 yards and eight touchdowns on 137 carries (5.6 YPC) in 16 regular season games. Coleman, meanwhile, gained 544 yards on 137 similar carries with six rushing touchdowns in 14 games played.
Unless the conversation with Mostert includes the promise of a raise, it’s unclear whether the RB will rescind his exchange request.
This offseason, the 49ers traded Matt Breida to Miami. Mostert sits atop the Niners’ RB depth chart with Coleman, Jerick McKinnon (coming off an injury) and Jeff Wilson.
