Embattled R&B star R. Kelly was attacked Wednesday by a resident of the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to his attorney Steve Greenberg.

Greenberg said they were unaware of the extent of his injuries and did not provide information from the federal prison.

TMZ reported a resident ran into R. Kelly’s cell and began beating him. The report, which cites anonymous federal sources for law enforcement, said the resident attacked R. Kelly because he was angry at the facility that was occasionally shut down due to R. Kelly protesters.

The Grammy-winning musician has pleaded guilty to dozens of state and federal sexual misconduct charges in Illinois, Minnesota and New York.

In April, a federal judge denied R. Kelly’s request for release from prison for COVID-19.

“Anyway, it’s time to release Mr Kelly,” Greenberg said in an email. “The government can not guarantee his safety, and they can not give him his day in court. We should not lock people up indefinitely because we can not provide them with proper process.”
