Qualcomm is reportedly developing its own branded smartphone, which will be built in partnership with Asus, a report said. Digitimes.
It won’t just be a run-of-the-mill phone either, either – it will be a premium gaming phone, according to industry sources, and could be out soon in late 2020.
According to the Android Authority, Asus will be responsible for the design and development of the hardware – which should come as no surprise after many of the high-end gaming phones introduced by the company are finished in the Asus ROG in. Qualcomm, on the other hand, will create ‘industry design’ and software running on top of its Snapdragon 875 platform.
The report notes that the next Asus ROG phone and Qualcomm’s gaming phone will share parts and components such as display, memory, camera, battery and cooling system, so expect some hardware similarities between the two smartphone lines.
That Snapdragon 875 chipset has not been officially confirmed, but it is rumored to debut on Qualcomm’s annual show on December 1 and 2 when the company traditionally unveils its new mobile-optimized silicone that will be featured in next year’s flagships.
Snapdragon 875 and flagships the following year
Almost every flagship Android phone sports a Snapdragon 800-series chipset that year; For instance, the Snapdragon 865 debuted in the Samsung Galaxy S20 line and, like the OnePlus 8 series, came out in phones during 2020.
But over the past few months, top-end phones, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 line, have been transformed into slightly faster Snapdragon 865 Plus chipsets. Thus, we can probably expect a Snapdragon 875 Plus, but not before mid-2021.
In the meantime, we’ll wait to see what the next Snapdragon 875 will bring: 865 Since the start of the year of widespread 5G support, we’re curious what its successor will do. Ideally, this would bundle a 5G modem with the chipset, as earlier versions in the Snapdragon 800 line were with a 4G modem. This will save valuable space that is currently taken up by independent modems such as the Snapdragon X55, which combine with current top-end Snapdragon chipsets to enable 5G connectivity.
