QB Caleb Williams, No. 15 on ESPN 300, commits to Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma had some additional fireworks on Saturday when ESPN 300 quarterback Caleb Williams got engaged to the Sooners.

Williams is the 15th overall prospect and chose Oklahoma over LSU and Maryland. He is a 6-foot-2-foot, 210-pound prospect from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, and had almost every major program after him during his recruitment.

As the highest-ranked double-threat quarterback in the class, Williams, who made the announcement in an interview with CBS Sports, was the highest-ranked uncommitted prospect right now in the 2021 cycle. Overall, Williams ranks first. behind quarterback Sam Huard, who is committed to Washington.

Oklahoma and coach Lincoln Riley have made a name for themselves with transfer quarterbacks with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and most recently Jalen Hurts. Both Mayfield and Murray won the Heisman Trophy and were No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.

However, that trend of transfer quarterbacks leading the offense will stop this season. Tanner Mordecai has an opportunity at the initial job, but the staff signed Spencer Rattler in the class of 2019, and Rattler seems to be the favorite to win the starting point.

Rattler was the No. 1 ranked double-threat quarterback in his class and the 29th overall pick. The staff also signed ESPN 300 quarterback Chandler Morris, the No. 7 double-threat quarterback in 2020, and is now adding Williams to that list.

Riley has already shown he can mold quarterbacks, so adding two No. 1 double-threat quarterbacks to the roster now doesn’t bode well for opposing defenses.

Before the engagement, the Sooners were ranked No. 24 overall. With Williams on board, Oklahoma now has five ESPN 300 commitments and 10 total commitments.
