Qatar Airways passengers must now wear face shields over their masks

Qatar Airways, which resumed flights to Boston on Wednesday, now requires passengers to wear masks over their masks while traveling.

Passengers will receive face shields at the departure gate, except for those traveling from Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, where they will be provided at the check-in counter, the airline announced Thursday. Disposable face shields are available in sizes for adults and children.

According to the airline, economy class passengers must wear both the face shield and face masks throughout the flight, except while eating or drinking. Business class travelers “are asked to wear their mask and mask on board at their discretion as they enjoy more space and privacy,” the airline wrote. Children under the age of two are exempt from using both.

“During the COVID-19 crisis, the safety of our passengers has been our top priority,” Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, said in a press release. “By introducing these additional safety and hygiene measures on board, our customers can rely on us and our unmatched expertise to safely take them to their destination.”

Passengers will also receive a free “protection kit”, which includes a single-use surgical mask, large disposable powder-free gloves and hand sanitizer. The crew also wears new disposable gowns over their uniforms in addition to the safety glasses, gloves and masks they wear, the airline said.

Last week, Qatar Airways announced that it has resumed flights to 11 destinations worldwide, including Boston. The airline plans to resume almost two-thirds of its pre-COVID-19 network by the end of the month.
