Puppy List Movement: Dillon Maples Out, Colin Rea In

The Chicago Cubs today moved out of Dillon Maples after their optional performance in the strike zone last night against the Reds, and chose him for the South Bend group.

Instead, the correct Colin Rea will join the squad.

Rea, 30, was PCL’s Pitcher of the Year in 2019, being one of the few starting pitchers to succeed despite the ultra-juicy ball. He is a notable former prospect whose rise was slowed by elbow surgery, and he wonders if his control / command / contact approach will play at the major league level. With the Cubs now, they will likely use it in extended relief if there is a short departure in the next few days.

At a minimum, well, at least in theory, Rea should be able to throw strikes, something the Cubs have been the worst at in baseball so far outside of their bullpen.

My guess as to why Rex Brothers was saved, but Maples was not. Brothers is left-handed in an 11-man bullpen that only has him and Kyle Ryan. Get a little more track with Brad Wieck (hamstrings) out.
