505 refuses to elaborate on what those “blockers” are, but the scope of 505’s argument is direct. In the words of the company, the upgrade path offered is “only possible when upgrading the same version of the game”, which makes some practical sense. The Ultimate Edition includes the core game, plus all the fixes, patches and extensions after the launch – 505 obviously would not want to make any of that material available for free to people who only have current gen versions of the core game. And because additional development only happens to versions of next-generation Ultimate Editions, there is no direct upgrade path for owners of the core version of Control. (505 also confirmed today that the Ultimate Edition is the only version of the game available for PS5 and Xbox Series X.)
Despite the fact that “no decision was taken lightly”, it does not seem to find a reconciling solution dat difficult. With the release of 505, the ultimate point of Control Ultimate Edition is to give new players the full Control experience in one title. Instead of alienating existing fans – especially those who have already bought the core game and spent $ 25 for the season pass – why not cut some deals? Since 505 states that there will be no “new exclusive content” for next-gen platforms, why not make the Ultimate Edition available for free to season pass holders? Or are you offering a discount on the Ultimate Edition to people who already have the core game? 505 seems to have his mind solid, but who knows – buying willingness sometimes does more for the bottom than forcing selling.
