Paris Saint-Germain reportedly fears striker Kylian Mbappe may have suffered an injury that ended the season on Friday after being knocked down by a slippery tackle in the first half of his club’s French Cup victory by 1 -0 over Saint Etienne. The match marked the end of a four-month hiatus from sports in the country.
Opposition captain Loic Perrin went for a tackle in the 26th minute, forcing the French forward to twist his right ankle as he fell. Mbappe had to limp out when he left the game while Perrin was sent off after a video review.
According to an ESPN report, scans of the striker’s injury were scheduled for Friday night. The current concern is that Mbappe suffered ligament damage and will not be able to play for the rest of the season.
“It broke,” Mbappe reportedly told French President Emmanuel Macron about the injury during the trophy ceremony. Apparently, Macron asked if something in the 21-year-old’s leg was broken, and Mbappe said, “No, I don’t think so.” So at least that can serve as a bit of optimism for PSG supporters.
Mbappe had a brace around his ankle and had crutches when he returned to the sideline of the team in the second half of the game. He was able to celebrate with his teammates after the final whistle.
