The source for the official PlayStation retail site page in the US mentions that PS5 orders could be limited to one per customer. As noted on Reddit, you can go to this page on Sony’s direct sales site, click “View page source” in your browser, search for PS5 and you will see the following message:
“You can only purchase one version of the PS5 ™ console: disk or digital. You have already added a PS5 ™ console to your cart.”
Now, since this message doesn’t appear on the current page, it may just be a placeholder message on the direct PlayStation website. However, the very specific wording suggests that a one per customer rule is planned to order the console, regardless of the version you want.
Still, this rule wouldn’t be all that important: the PlayStation Direct store is just a retailer, and there’s nothing stopping you from preordering the PS5 elsewhere when the time comes.
However, if you were hoping to reserve two consoles at launch, say for two outrageously lucky kids who don’t get along, it might be more difficult than simply adding two consoles to your cart.
It is also interesting that this message is relatively easy to find, despite the fact that Sony did not set a date when the PS5 will actually be available for pre-order. This information, along with the PS5 price, may be revealed as part of a rumored State of the Game event in August.
This ‘rule’ would not be a big surprise
The demand for the PS5 is likely to be incredibly high, so this type of rule only levels the playing field for customers who want to get the console. Hopefully, you should also keep resellers at bay. This year’s Nintendo Switch shortage has led to inflated secondary market prices, with some third-party vendors ruthlessly charging the console for demand during the crash.
Hopefully this will make it easier to find the console in the lead up to the end of the year. The PS5 launch window is set to ‘Holiday 2020’.
