If you’ve been trying to buy a PS5 right now, you know that it was incredibly difficult to pull off because of the stock depletion and ridiculously high demand. But imagine ordering the PS5 when the day of launch arrives and getting the wrong thing in the post – say, an Enerf gun, or an air fryer that you didn’t even order.
According to a number of Twitter posts, the same thing happened to some who bought the PS5 from Amazon UK.
Journalist and presenter Rebecca April May (hey, she interviewed Pedro Pascal for Tekradar!) Posted that after giving the delivery password for the PS5 order, she received an air fryer from Amazon UK:
Happy # PS5 each day. Tried to document the unveiling of one of our own, but Amazon tricked us with an unsolicited air fryer instead (after giving us the delivery password). Did anyone else have this problem today? pic.twitter.com/99IUSzSJUUNovember 19, 2020
It’s no different in a clear indication, either, that Patrick Dickens, author of Push Square, posted something similar on Twitter – this time receiving an NRP gun instead of Sony’s Next-Gen console:
So, @ AmazonNews thinks someone stole my (late day) PS5. Right external b, x, wrong thing. Where can I get help? OnAmazonHelp layPlayStationUK pic.twitter.com/qBIZ3RHl1INovember 20, 2020
Additional reports on Twitter (which we can’t verify, it’s worth pointing out) refer to receiving a foot massage, George Foreman grill or just a bag of rice.
Now, while the exact answer to what happened here is unclear in all cases, that is Certainly Not so good from a retailer as big as Amazon. On the surface, it looks like Bxx was stolen before it reached its destination.
An Amazon spokesperson told Eurogamer that it was investigating the complaints. “We’re all about making our customers happy, and it didn’t happen for the small amount of these orders. We’re really sorry about that and are investigating exactly what happened.
“We reach out to every customer who has had a problem and they’ve alerted us so we can fix it. Anyone who has had an order issue can contact our customer service team for help.”
Tekradar contacted Amazon UK for further comment, and received a similar statement. Amazon also mentioned that this is a link to customer service to use if you have been affected.
Why not cut the refund quite a bit
Now, refund Seems As such it would make a reasonable conclusion on the matter, but the problem is that holding the PS5 was a feat in the first place over the past few months.
What you were paying was a chance to go before the Sony console, knowing that further stock was not likely to be widely available, and selling the console for around so 1000 at about so 1,328 / AU (approximately 32,328 / AU) predictably ruined the whole thing. To avoid scalpers. 8 1,819 on eBay).
Getting your money back, then, is probably not enough on its own – hopefully when the next wave comes it will make Amazon better by replacing PS5 orders with priority stock.
