Protesters in Charlotte spray gunpowder, arrested ahead of RNC


Authorities in Charlotte, NC, deployed pepper spray and made multiple arrests Sunday night as protesters took to the streets for the third night in a row to protest against the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a string of tweets that officials deployed pepper spray and made two arrests while clearing roads filled with protesters who began marching throughout Charlotte on Sunday.

Police said one of the arrested persons had an exceptional felony sentence and the second person arrested “interfered with officers” who made the first arrest.

More than 100 protesters gathered last Sunday, ahead of the first night of the RNC, in Marshall Park before splitting into multiple groups and marching through uptown, according to the Charlotte Observer, adding that some even wore umbrellas in preparation for possible tear gas. .

As the night wore on, a group of protesters erupted near the Westin Charlotte Hotel, where delegates are said to be staying, where they “No RNC in CLT” and “F — Donald Trump, “according to the outlet singing.

From there, protesters marched on South Tryon Street, where they allegedly met police. Protesters then marched with Backon back to Tryon Street to the intersection with Trade Street.

Officers said protesters began blocking roads with several objects, eventually experiencing traffic jams.

“Crowds continued to block traffic and prevent buses and cars from moving,” one tweet read. “Protesters refuse to clear the intersection.”

At one point, a car passing by the public was surrounded by protesters.

When officers intervened, they claimed to have been “attacked” by the protesters.

Police said there were four arrests starting at 1 a.m. Monday in addition to the five arrested Saturday, and at least four on Friday.

GOP officials in Charlotte are expected to vote to reinstate President Trump in a small session Monday.
