Professor who announced his retirement after racist and sexist tweets were killed by self-inflicted shooting

A university professor, whose rhetoric had been described as “vile” and “hateful” by his university, died of a self-inflicted shot, police said Monday.

New Hanover County Sheriff’s officers were asked to verify Professor Mike Adams of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, who had not been heard or seen in a few days.

“Once they were able to gain access to the home, officers found the home’s owner, Mike Adams, who died in a room,” Sheriff’s Lt. Jerry Brewer said in a statement Monday.

“Detectives began their investigation in partnership with the coroner and it was determined that Mr. Adams committed suicide with a single gunshot wound to the head.”

Adams, 55, who lived alone, is survived by his brother, Brewer said.

Adam taught sociology and criminology, and was known on campus for racist and sexist tweets and other comments, including on Muslims, gays, and efforts to combat the coronavirus.

That long story prompted UNCW on June 5 to call their language “hateful,” “disgusting,” and “vile.” Then, weeks later, on June 29, the school announced that Adams had decided to withdraw on August 1.
