‘Probable’ tornado in Florida flip truck, causing significant damage in DeLand


Significant damage and flooding were reported across a Central Florida community after a probable tornado erupted through the area Tuesday, dancing trees and even turning over a truck.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Melbourne had issued a tornado warning in Volusia County until 4.15pm when the storm passed through the DeLand area.

The forecasting office said it sent an investigation team to DeLand to investigate the damage.

“Stay out of the area tonight as first responders continue their work,” de NWS tweeted. “Conditions are not safe because of many downed trees and power lines.”

The Florida Highway Patrol shared a video of a box truck ending up “in the middle” of the apparent twist.

“The driver was taken to the hospital with bumps and bruises,” he said FHP sei. “You never know when weather may turn your life upside down.”

The city of DeLand also shared a video of flooding after the storm system went through.

Kevin Captain, director of community information with the Volusia County Government, told FOX35 that more than 11,000 homes and businesses were without power after the storm.

“Duke Energy is mobilizing regional resources in an effort to restore power immediately,” Captain said in a statement. “Crews of official and public works erect trees and roads.

The American Red Cross is deploying its Disaster Action Team to the area to provide emergency assistance as needed.

Captain said residents affected are in need of help as food and supplies need to visit the Red Cross in the Lowe parking lot at 303 E. International Speedway Blvd. in DeLand

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said there were no reports of injuries or loss of life, but that “significant storm damage” was reported on the north side of DeLand.

First responders asked people to prevent the area from responding to crews on houses.

“North DeLand: Please avoid storm-damaged areas as crews do their job! If we give them some space to work, they’ll get this done sooner,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood tweeted.
