Bayern Munich is champion of the DFB-Pokal! The search for the domestic double is complete, and in such dominant Fashion. We never sought to be in serious trouble throughout the match in what was a wonderful display of relentless pressure, fast passing and the incredible quality of the Bayern team.
Today’s game featured several excellent performances, making it incredibly difficult to choose prizes. I’ve done my best to acknowledge the players who deserved it tonight, but feel free to tell us how you feel in the comments!
Here are the party prizes for the game:
Jersey Exchange: Moussa Diaby
Arguably Diaby was the most active player in Leverkusen’s attack, he burst forward with timely runs and put his rhythm to good use. He crossed at least 4 good balls, putting his teammates in good positions to score, and he would have had at least two assists if Volland had been more adept at finishing. The frustration on his face after the game is understandable, after what was a good performance from the winger.
The fact that Robert Lewandowski has obtained an excellent brace and is not yet higher up in the awards is a testament to the quality of the performances we saw today on the field. Two goals well taken, the first an excellent rocket, the second a beautiful chip. Also, be grateful for all the beautiful movies and passes you made in midfield, and the great role you played in accumulating the other goals.
Joshua Kimmich is a lawn mower. Cover each blade of grass. Jokes aside, it probably covered every blade of grass in the field. Very well on the defensive, making some good penetrating runs and assisting the second goal by first winning the ball to start the move and then hitting Gnabry with a perfectly weighted pass which is one of the best jobs we’ve seen of him. This guy is in beast mode, and it’s going to be hard for me to find a fitter DM right now.
Oh Jerome! What an amazing performance. Boateng went back the years in style with an excellent change in defense. Always there to rescue the defense (with an incredible tackle to avoid a sure goal) and his usual splendid balls from the top, he gave nothing to complain about. I never thought this would happen, but Suele will not be a safe starter once I compete for a starting point again.
Were you ever in doubt? Starting the ‘Alaba show’ with the absolute beauty of a free kick taken with that powerful left foot of his, he never missed a beat. He used his pace and athleticism with devastating effect to launch a solid defensive trade, and started the game from behind, being instrumental in team building. If fans weren’t convinced enough, this game only showed how much we really need to extend Alaba. Getting another player like him will be impossible. I hope Brazzo convinces him to spread with his charm.
