Even before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their bombshell exit from royal life, the rumored plan was always to establish a home base in Los Angeles so that Baby Archie could “grow up with understanding his American roots.” Not so surprisingly, then, that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex went straight to Meghan’s birthplace after a short, wintery stint in Canada, and began house hunting. A little surprisingly, they wound up shopping in Santa Barbara, about 100 miles away. And while her new home is indeed very fancy, it was apparently not the location of an inaccessible 16 bathroom that drove her to the California coast, but Harry’s reported hatred of LA
According to Us Weekly’s sources, Montecito – where the former royals eventually landed – “was always an option.” Apparently Meghan visited as a teenager “and fell in love with the picturesque landscape and beautiful architecture.” A source explained: “But to begin with, she and Harry wanted to give Los Angeles a shot. Unfortunately, Harry absolutely hated it. ”
And what exactly does Harry hate so much about the city? Was it the traffic, the related sprawling, the smog? Does he miss seasons? We can only guess, though Us weekly reports that “the timing was so wrong in the middle of the [coronavirus] pandemic and they do not lack privacy. ”
The Sussex family’s fight with the tabloids has been ongoing, and seems to be one of the bigger reasons behind their departure from the UKLA was no different: The couple dealt with harsh invasions of privacy, including drones that were in an attempt repeatedly zooms over her rental home to photograph her playing with her one-year-old son in the backyard. In July, they filed a lawsuit against the state of California over the proven extreme burglary. That, from Harry’s perspective, Montecito seemed like a solid compromise, according to Us weekly: “A little over an hour’s drive from LA, where a majority of her work is based, and yet far enough away to escape the crowds, paparazzi and tourism in Hollywood.” Fingers crossed.
