Prince Harry rode on ‘Journey to Awakening’ by Meghan Markle

Authors of a biography of Harry and Meghan – released tomorrow – have discussed how the Duchess of Sussex helped guide the Duke on his ‘journey to wakefulness’.

Prince Harry has publicly spoken out about “unconscious bias” and the couple has called on the Commonwealth to “recognize the past” in a move towards greater racial equality, as Meghan spoke in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and shared her experiences as a biracial woman.

Co-author of Finding Freedom Omid Scobie told National Public Radio: “Harry’s journey to awakening has been very public. We have seen and trained him along the way, but this experience of witnessing Meghan face racist remarks and comments would have been the first time he had seen anyone in his life as someone he was particularly close to being influenced by it in a particular way. ”

The Duchess of Sussex has been targeted by racist trolls on social media, while some have pointed to the double standard regarding how Meghan is reported in headlines as opposed to white female members of the Royal Family.

Somewhere in their relationship, Harry issued a statement via royal channels in which he said there had been a “line cross” – the “racial undertones of commentaries”, and the sexism and racism of social media trolls and comments on web articles. The couple currently live in Los Angeles with their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor after retiring as senior royals on March 31.

Author Scobie said the upcoming biography Finding Freedom “would talk about some of the more obvious examples in some of the media coverage”, as well as “things that have flown under the radar”, including the way Meghan ‘was different’.

According to Othering and Belonging, the acting of othering is defined as a “set of dynamics, processes and structures that cause marginalization and persistent inequality in one of the full range of human differences based on group identities” and examples including other people based on race, sexuality, religion and more – people define by their differences to exclude them, instead of the commonality they share.

‘We’ve seen it several times that she’s not one of us,’ Scobie continued, ‘and now, what do they mean by none of us? And I think there are things like Harry’s really needed to become more and learn to see when it happens to him. And Meghan would have been the person who accompanied him on that journey. ‘

Finding Freedom will be released on August 11th. It was written by Royal Reporters Scobie and Carolyn Durand. In a statement, they revealed that the Sussexes “did not contribute” to the book and were not interviewed for it.

Excerpts have been released prior to the publication of the book, covering everything from the couple’s first date to discussions about their departure as senior royals at the Sandringham Summit.
