The NFLPA is negotiating that the roster size for the start of training camp should be limited to just 80 players. This means that 10 unfortunate members of each franchise’s roster will never have a chance to show their skills. Since the camp reporting dates are still slated for around the corner, those cuts to the list could be announced any day after the list size has been made official.
Let’s take a look at the 10 Steelers I think the cuts will get before camp starts, along with some predictions from other BTSC writers.
Michael Beck’s List:
one) Arrion SpringsDefensive back
At least one corner won’t make it to training camp, as the Steelers generally have 6 during the season, but currently sit with 10. O Springs, Breon Borders or James Pierre will be cut.
two) Christian kuntz, Long snapper / Linebacker
Kuntz pressured Kameron Canaday a year ago for the initial long snapper job, but ultimately lost. Carrying an extra snapper would be silly.
3) Corliss waiterPunter
There is no reason why the Steelers should cut an extra skill position player to bring two punters to camp. The waiter can easily come back if Jordan Berry has difficulties.
4) JT BarrettQuarterback
The Steelers currently have five quarterbacks on the roster for a position where ultimately only one should be playing in a game. Cutting Barrett still allows Paxton Lynch to fight Devlin Hodges for the final spot.
5) Ralph Webb, Running backwards
The Steelers will likely bring 4 running backs to the regular season, but currently sit at 7. It could justify the club releasing Webb and Trey Edmunds since the only question left in the position is whether the Steelers will lead Jaylen Samuels or Kerrith Whyte. Jr.
6) John Battle, Safety
Yes, the Steelers need depth of safety, however they have 7 safety devices to fill four or five points. Not only that, but the top backups will likely be corners. The other two securities to make this list will be asked to play great special team roles.
7) Kevin Rader, Hard ending
Unfortunately, either of the two newcomers, Dax Raymond or Rader, will not be on this list. I’m leaving with Rader because what’s the point of making Raymond a spot if we’re going to cut him right away.
8) Quadree Henderson, Receiver / Payer
The Steelers have plenty of catchers to deal with during training camp, boys like Henderson will have a hard time getting a place on this team, and the Steelers will cut the man back a second time.
9) Christian DiLauroTackle
The Steelers have six tackles for just three or four jobs. I’m picking up former XFLer Anthony Coyle to earn the NFL official camp spot.
10) Spencer nighFullback
The UDFA will meet outside with great fullback Derek Watt in the mix. In a position where teams can’t even carry a true fullback, I don’t think the Steelers can justify bringing two to training camp at the expense of another receiver or lineman.
Explanation: As you probably noticed, this list is made up almost exclusively of players who already have an NFL training camp under their belts. Basically, I think every rookie makes this team rely on its potential being unknown, and the coaching staff already knows what they have in their veterans.
Flip the Fisher list:
Explanation: Unrecruited rookie free agents will bear the brunt of the cuts to 80 players. The notable exception is Paxton Lynch. The Steelers don’t need another arm from camp and I think the league has seen enough of their talent.
Dave Schofield’s List:
Explanation: I think the Steelers will retain most of their rookies to get a better idea of what they can do. Known for finding some great players like UDFA, if they cut most of them, it will be difficult to find a hidden gem. I think most of the cuts will come from players who have been to a training camp before but have not stayed. The greater the possibility of forming the practice team, the more likely it is that a player is part of the list of 80 players. This is why I cut the punter, long snapper, and fullback because they are low priority positions. But don’t be surprised if the bettor comes back for a few days when they really come into the field to practice and see what he can do.
